In the classic allegory, The Pilgrims Progress, John Bunyan writes that after climbing the Hill of Difficulty, Christian saw two men named Mistrust and Timorous running toward him. He tells them they are running the wrong way. They need to turn around if they hope to reach the Celestial City. Fearfully, they tell him that they have given up and are returning home. The way is much too dangerous. In fact, up ahead are two fierce lions lying on either side of the road and if he tries to pass them, Christian will surely be killed! Christian is afraid but he decides to continue on.Eventually, as he approaches the Palace Beautiful, he sees the lions on either side of the road. He must pass between them. Poor Christian! What could he possibly do? He did not want to turn back but if he pressed on, surely he would be devoured…
